Physical Planners Association Calls for School-Centered Approach in Tackling Plastic Pollution

Odomase: The Local Government Service Association of Physical Planners (LOGSAP) has called for a basic school-centered approach in tackling the plastic pollution menace in the country. Mrs. Gifty Nyarko, the National Interim President of the Association, emphasized the need to integrate ‘student-led plastic waste separation project and greening competitions’ in basic schools.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Nyarko highlighted the importance of engaging school children in efforts to address plastic waste pollution in their communities. She stressed that instilling concepts of a plastic pollution-free environment in basic schools is crucial in combating the issue. Furthermore, Mrs. Nyarko called on the country to hold plastic manufacturing companies and importers accountable, urging them to invest in plastic waste recycling initiatives.

Mrs. Nyarko stated that plastic pollution poses a significant challenge for the nation and advocated for effective collaboration to address the problem. She explained that plastic waste and pollution threaten planning and development due to their detrimental effects, ranging from blocked drains in cities to polluted rivers and unsanitary conditions in expanding settlements.

She noted that plastic pollution hinders drainage systems, compromises infrastructure development, and ultimately undermines sustainable growth. Mrs. Nyarko urged professionals in the physical planning sector to lead intensified public education on the impacts of plastic pollution. She also encouraged households and businesses to segregate their waste, reduce single-use plastics, and support recycling initiatives.

Mrs. Nyarko called for urgent action to combat plastic pollution in the country, stating, “Our land is our legacy, and let’s protect it together.”
