Tarkwa: Manganese Ladies Association, supported by Ghana Manganese Company Limited (GMCL), has distributed more than 1,000 sanitary pads to girls in its host communities to promote menstrual hygiene as part of the 2025 World Menstrual Hygiene Day celebrations. The event, observed annually on May 28, carried the theme ‘Together for a Period Friendly World.’
According to Ghana News Agency, the initiative reached communities including Tarkwa Banso, Enyinasie, Akyim, Domeabra, Esuaso, and Bonsawire. Mrs. Cynthia Quaidoo, Secretary of the Manganese Ladies Association, stated that GMCL’s initiative involves annual visits to communities within its operational areas to educate young girls about menstrual health, hygiene, and management. She stressed that celebrating World Menstrual Hygiene Day helps create supportive and inclusive environments for girls who menstruate.
Mrs. Quaidoo emphasized that menstruation should not hinder education, stating, “All girls deserve to attend school with dignity and confidence.” This year’s programme was launched at Akyim in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region.
Madam Stephanie Mbeah, Headmistress of Akyim Emmanuel Methodist School, expressed gratitude to GMCL and Manganese Ladies Association for their involvement. She noted that the knowledge gained by the girls would empower them to manage their menstrual cycles more effectively.
Opedom Kofi Amu, Ntotuohene of Akyim, highlighted the financial challenges many girls face in accessing sanitary pads. He noted that the support from GMCL and Manganese Ladies Association provides much-needed relief to these families and girls.
Some learners expressed their appreciation, with one stating, “I am so grateful for the pads, it’s a huge relief. The programme has made a big difference for me; I can now focus on school without worrying about my menstruation.”
