Tema: The Tema Missionary Technical Institute has emerged as the winner of a menstrual hygiene art competition held among senior high schools within the Tema Central Constituency. The participants from the institute scored 84 points, surpassing competitors Chemu SHS and Tema Presbyterian SHS.
According to Ghana News Agency, the event was organized by the Adolescent Health Unit of the Tema General Hospital (TGH) to address menstrual hygiene issues among high school students. Participants were tasked with creating and explaining artworks that depicted healthy menstrual hygiene practices.
In an interview, Mrs. Nana Egyiriba Idun Acquah, Head of the TGH Adolescent Health Unit, praised the students for their display of artwork, knowledge, teamwork, and presentation skills. She noted that the initiative forms part of their annual Menstrual Hygiene Month celebrations, aimed at educating students on menstrual hygiene with the help of health professionals.
Mrs. Acquah emphasized the importance of addressing menstrual hygiene to ensure the health and safety of young girls. She called on institutions to support girls with necessary resources and advocated for including boys in menstrual hygiene education to reduce stigma.
She remarked that educating boys on menstruation helps them understand it as a normal life cycle and encourages them to support their female peers rather than ostracize them. Mrs. Acquah also highlighted the emotional stress girls face during menstruation and urged campus nurses to offer mental support, advising them to be mindful of their language when guiding students.
The event concluded with a commendation for all participants for sharing their knowledge, and a box of sanitary pads was awarded to the winning team as a prize.
