Adidome: A group of teachers who commute daily from Adidome in the Central Tongu District to schools in Bakpa are calling on the government to urgently intervene in reshaping and reconstructing the severely deteriorated road connecting the two communities. The appeal follows heavy rains in recent days that rendered the route impassable, leaving many teachers stranded and unable to reach their schools. The situation has severely disrupted teaching and learning activities in the area.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Attipoe Gorni Ebenezer, one of the affected teachers, recounted the ordeal of navigating the flooded and muddy path. ‘We sometimes have to remove our shoes and trousers to wade through the water. The road becomes dangerous, and vehicles, including motorbikes, get stuck or even plunge into waterlogged sections,’ he said. He added that the stagnant water and poor drainage system worsen the road’s condition anytime it rains, forcing many teachers to abandon their commute or risk their safety.
Even those with private means of transport, including motorbikes and cars, were unable to cross due to the depth and spread of the floodwaters. The teachers described the situation as frustrating and called for immediate government attention. The Ghana News Agency observed that the affected route poses a significant barrier to accessibility, particularly during the rainy season, and may hinder both students and teachers from fulfilling their daily academic responsibilities if not urgently addressed.
In GNA’s earlier interview with Mr. Dodzi Addison Mornyuie, the Central Tongu District Chief Executive, he indicated that the District Assembly planned to deploy District Road Improvement Project (DRIP) machines to reshape and construct key roads within the district. However, it remains unclear when these efforts will commence on the Adidome-Bakpa stretch. The teachers are urging the Assembly and relevant government authorities to prioritise the rehabilitation of the road, citing its direct impact on education delivery and community development in the Bakpa area.
