Suspected Political Thugs Attacked Electoral Office In South Nigeria

Nigeria’s electoral body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), yesterday said, local security agencies had been put on alert, after a group of suspected political thugs, attacked one of its offices in the south-eastern state of Abia, in an attempt to disrupt the electoral process.

In a terse statement posted via Twitter, the INEC said, the unknown thugs invaded its office in the Obingwa local government area of Abia, where results of the governorship and state legislature elections held Saturday, were being collated.

“The commission is monitoring the situation,” the INEC said in the statement, hinting at a more elaborate statement to be released later, on the incident.

Governorship elections were held Saturday in 28 states across Nigeria, while the state house of assembly polls was held in all 36 states, in the most populous African country.
