Several Killed in Mali as Boat Capsizes Near Timbuktu

Timbuktu: A boat capsized near the fabled northern Malian city of Timbuktu, resulting in the deaths of several individuals, according to a statement from the regional governor.

According to Nam News Network, approximately 50 people were believed to be on board with their luggage when the vessel sank late Thursday. Preliminary reports suggest that the sinking was likely due to non-compliance with navigation rules. The incident resulted in multiple fatalities, with others reported missing and significant material losses recorded.

Boats are commonly used in northern Mali on the Niger River and its tributaries. The Niger River spans 1,750 kilometers (1,100 miles) across Mali, serving as a link between the south and the arid north of the country.

Mali, a landlocked nation, has been experiencing a deep security crisis since 2012. This crisis is driven by violence from jihadist groups and criminal organizations based on community affiliations.
