Mahama Inaugurates Police Council, Urges Members to Serve with Distinction

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama inaugurated a 10-member Police Council chaired by Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, urging them to serve with distinction in line with the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the Council to advise the President on internal security matters.

According to Ghana News Agency, the Council is tasked with roles such as advising on services, budgeting, administration, and promotions of officers above the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police. It also holds the authority to make regulations for the Police Service with the President’s prior approval.

President Mahama emphasized the critical timing of the Council’s formation, as public confidence in national institutions is being tested. He highlighted the need for the Ghana Police Service to meet the growing expectations of the people, urging the Council to uphold the dignity and integrity of the Service.

The President addressed issues such as politicization and breaches of conduct within the Police Service, calling for the Council to be bold and impartial in addressing grievances and restoring trust. He stressed professionalism over political pressure in decision-making and emphasized a vision of policing centered on community partnerships and empathy.

President Mahama charged the Council to support community policing reforms, enhance accountability, and provide officers with necessary resources and training. He also highlighted the evolving nature of crime and urged modernization through technology and the recruitment of ethical officers.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, representing the Council, expressed gratitude for the President’s confidence and pledged to lead with transparency and respect for the rule of law.
