The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) officially opened the conference on operationalization of the IGAD Women Peace and Security Forum (IWPSF).
Executive Secretary of IGAD, Workneh Gebeyehu officially opened the conference on the operationalization of the IGAD Women Peace and Security Forum (IWPSF) that took place in Nairobi Kenya.
This landmark event brings together board members of the IWPSF, and national chapters, according to IGAD.
A new era of women’s empowerment in peace processes is evident as it takes central stage, igniting conversations on women’s vital roles in peace processes across the IGAD region.
It is to be recalled that the IGAD Women, Peace and Security Forum (IWPSF) was launched in 2013 and it was agreed that a Women and Peace Forum Board that comprises of three members from each IGAD Member State represent the Executive, the Legislature and the Civil Society.
The IGAD Secretariat was also tasked to develop a strategic and financing plans for the operationalization of the IWPSF.
IGAD has for nearly two decades consistently promoted Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) in the region.
There has been a significant progress especially in the women in Peace and Security area since IGAD focused on implementing Regional, Continental and Global instruments to this end, it was learned.
