Essarkyir: Participants at a Forum of Civil Education Clubs at Ekumfi District have been urged to be ambassadors of environmental cleanliness wherever they find themselves. The forum, organised by the Ekumfi Directorate of the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) under the theme ‘Ending Plastic Pollution: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle,’ was held to celebrate the 2025 edition of World Environment Day at Essarkyir.
According to Ghana News Agency, Madam Cecilia Dam, Head of Ekumfi District NCCE, advocated for concerted efforts to safeguard and protect the environment from destruction. The forum saw participation from various schools, including Essarkyir Methodist Basic School and Essuehyia Methodist Basic School, as well as youth groups, traditional leaders, and other stakeholders in the district. The engagement aimed to inspire students to be responsible citizens and environmental stewards, encouraging them to cultivate habits of environmental protection, as mandated by article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution.
Madam Dam emphasized the importance of rethinking plastic waste by applying the principles of reducing usage, reusing, and recycling. She urged the students to be law-abiding, patriotic, and responsible citizens for a better future in Ghana. Additionally, Madam Yayra Forgive Ameglah, Ekumfi District Environmental Health Director, highlighted the detrimental effects of plastic pollution and the crucial role young people play in environmental protection. She encouraged participants to maintain cleanliness in their surroundings and influence positive behavioral changes in their communities.
Nana Ishmael Asamoah, Ekumfi District Executive and special guest of honor, commended the Commission and schools for presenting an insightful program. He noted that the initiative would deepen the pupils’ understanding of environmental protection, helping them become responsible citizens for the betterment of Ekumfi State and the country.
The event also featured a drama staged by pupils on environmental issues and a dialogue showcasing their understanding of good environmental practices. Certificates were awarded to participating schools in recognition of their contributions to sustainable environmental awareness. To conclude the event, trees were planted within the compound of Essarkyir Methodist Basic School by the DCE, with assistance from Nana Essel VII, Odikro of Essarkyir, dignitaries, and some pupils, symbolizing their commitment to restoring and protecting the environment and reinforcing the message of environmental stewardship among young participants.
