Accra: Mr Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Minister of Transport, has called on domestic airline operators to consider reducing fares in light of the cedi’s appreciation against other currencies. He emphasized that the cedi’s gain is anticipated to positively impact service delivery and reduce the cost of doing business within the country. As a result, he urged local airlines to follow the lead of recent fare adjustments seen in the road transport sector.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Nikpe made these remarks during a stakeholder meeting organized by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in Accra. The meeting aimed to address sector issues and strategies to position Ghana as a leading aviation hub in the sub-region. Mr Nikpe mentioned that domestic airlines, including Passion Air and Africa World Airlines, are considering fare reductions and are currently in deliberations on the matter.
The Transport Minister also discussed government initiatives to improve aviation infrastructure, specifically mentioning plans to extend the Kumasi Airport runway. This expansion is expected to be completed by year-end. Additionally, he highlighted the government’s intention to establish a pilot training academy at Ho Airport, which is expected to generate jobs and bolster the local economy.
Mr Nikpe further encouraged foreign airlines to utilize local in-flight catering and entertainment services to help stimulate the economy. He underscored the aviation sector’s potential to contribute significantly to economic growth, emphasizing the industry’s ability to connect global businesses and trades.
He also sought cooperation from industry stakeholders as a 10-member task force continued efforts to establish a national airline. Reverend Stephen Wilfred Arthur, Acting Director General of the GCAA, reinforced the authority’s commitment to safety, security, and operational excellence. He outlined strategic pillars for the industry, such as regulatory innovation and stakeholder engagement.
Mr Arthur stressed the importance of partnerships and innovation in addressing challenges like cybersecurity and climate change. He commended government support and encouraged stakeholders to collaborate in making Ghana a preferred aviation hub. Other GCAA officials, including Mr David Akuamoah Boateng and Madam Patience Bonsu, presented departmental initiatives aligned with the organization’s objectives.
