BECE Begins Peacefully at Abavana Cluster of Schools

Accra: This year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) began smoothly at the Abavana Cluster of Schools, with no reported incidents. Mr. Kwasi Botwey, Supervisor at Abavana Compound ‘A’, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that all arrangements had been completed ahead of the examination. He said the exam commenced at 0917 hours due to the late arrival of examination materials. Mr. Botwey stated that measures were put in place to ensure a smooth process devoid of disturbances.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Botwey emphasized the importance of maintaining good behavior among candidates to avoid examination malpractice and encouraged them to study and perform well. He indicated that three schools were presenting candidates at the centre: Abavana Junior High School with 49 candidates, Kotobabi ‘4’ JHS with 43 candidates, and Faith Christian Academy with 40 candidates. Mr. Botwey advised candidates to avoid any form of cheating to prevent sanctions. He also appealed to the government to provide additional furniture, citing it as a major challenge facing the school.

Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, during a media briefing last Monday, called for the cooperation of all stakeholders to minimize or eliminate examination malpractice. He warned invigilators and supervisors against any acts that could compromise the integrity of the examinations, stating that anyone caught would face the law. Police personnel and invigilators are present at various centers to ensure order and a peaceful exercise.

Some schools visited by GNA declined interviews, stating they needed clearance from their superiors. A total of 603,328 candidates are sitting for the examination, comprising 306,078 females and 297,250 males. The examination, which began today, Wednesday, June 11, will end on June 18, 2025. Candidates are writing Social Studies and Computing papers on the first day.
