United Nigeria Airlines Honors Late President Rawlings with Aircraft Naming

Five years after the passing of former President Jerry John Rawlings, United Nigeria Airlines has paid tribute to his legacy by naming one of its aircraft after him. The newly named J.J. Rawlings aircraft made its debut as part of United Nigeria Airlines inaugural flight from Abuja to Accra, landing in Ghana on Monday morning.

According to Ghana News Agency, the flight carried several prominent figures, including Baba Jamal, Ghanas Ambassador to Nigeria, Chief Professor Obiora Okonkwo, the Chairman and CEO of United Nigeria Airlines, and senior Nigerian aviation officials. Upon arrival at Kotoka International Airport, a ceremony was held where Mr. Fritz Baffour, representing the Rawlings family, and Chief Professor Obiora unveiled the aircrafts name, J.J. Rawlings.The legend lives on.

During the formal inaugural ceremony at Terminal Three, Gate C8, Mr. Kofi Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, expressed his gratitude to United Nigeria Airlines for this gesture. He remarked that while the late President would have preferred to be remembered in the hearts of people rather than through monuments, the naming was a fitting tribute. Mr. Adams also noted how Rawlings passion for flying played a crucial role in the rural electrification project, which extended power across Ghana.

Mr. Baffour conveyed the Rawlings familys appreciation and highlighted the strengthened ties between Nigeria and Ghana, suggesting that their collaboration could surpass global powers. Chief Professor Okonkwo emphasized that the aircraft naming honors the legacy of the esteemed Air Force pilot and commemorates the fifth anniversary of his passing. He assured attendees that United Nigeria Airlines is committed to enhancing the aviation sector in West Africa.
