Lagos: The spread of misinformation, fake news, and disinformation has become a major concern in Nigeria, threatening the credibility of the mass media and the stability of the country. In response, editors from various media organizations have united to address this pressing issue.

According to European Union, a recent workshop held in Lagos brought together editors from print, online, and electronic media across Nigeria. Facilitated by the EU, the workshop aimed to enhance fact-checking skills in newsrooms as a proactive measure against the proliferation of fake news. The EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Mr. Gautier Mignot, emphasized the necessity of media literacy as a defense against misinformation and disinformation, urging editors to lead the charge. Approximately 40 editors attended the event, committing to the establishment of fact-check desks in their newsrooms.

The workshop, targeting members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, sought to fortify their capacity to identify and counter misinformation, thereby promoting accurate and trustworthy reporting. This initiative also aimed to instill a culture of content verification before publication, safeguarding the integrity of the Nigerian media landscape.

Ambassador Mignot underscored the significance of media literacy, stating that misleading information distorts reality and can shift the balance in favor of false narratives. He highlighted that any compromise in the integrity of information diminishes the public’s ability to make informed decisions. For media professionals, particularly editors, misleading information not only erodes the credibility of the message but also that of the messenger and the institution.

The President of the Guild of Editors, Mr. Eze Anaba, echoed these sentiments and pointed out the dangers that fake news and misinformation pose to Nigeria’s public opinion framework. He noted that the deliberate spread of false information undermines public trust and threatens social cohesion, democratic governance, and national security.
