Nicosia: More than 600 malnourished children have died in northern Nigeria in six months after failing to receive proper care as foreign aid dries up, a medical charity has said.

According to Nam News Network, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reported that northern Nigeria is currently facing a severe malnutrition crisis compounded by an existing insurgency. The organization highlighted a dramatic 208 percent increase in cases of the most severe and deadly form of malnutrition among children between January and June compared to the same period last year.

The situation is dire as the true extent of the crisis surpasses all initial predictions. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also affected, with an MSF survey of 750 mothers revealing that more than half were acutely malnourished, including 13 percent suffering from severe acute malnutrition.

Across the nation, nearly 31 million people are experiencing acute hunger. This alarming statistic was shared by David Stevenson, the chief of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Nigeria.
