President Mahama Meets Alex Soros to Discuss Ghana’s Economic and Democratic Progress

Accra: President John Dramani Mahama held a meeting with Mr. Alex Soros, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Open Society Foundations (OSF), focusing on Ghana’s progress in economic recovery, democratic governance, and regional stability.

According to African Press Organization, President Mahama briefed Mr. Soros on the policy measures driving Ghana’s economic revival and democratic achievements. Highlighting Ghana’s reputation for democratic governance, he mentioned the country’s successful electoral history under the Fourth Republican Constitution, which has facilitated peaceful transitions of power.

On the economic front, President Mahama emphasized Ghana’s rapid recovery, attributed to fiscal and monetary policies grounded in governance principles. He reported the appreciation of the Ghana Cedi by approximately 42% and a decline in the debt-to-GDP ratio, with aims for single-digit inflation soon. Acknowledging past investor concerns due to governance challenges, he assured Mr. Soros of his administration’s commitment to anti-corruption measures, citing initiatives like Operation Recover All the Loot (ORAL).

Regarding regional stability, President Mahama updated Mr. Soros on the efforts to improve relations with Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger. He noted recent ECOWAS meetings and an increased willingness for cooperation, highlighting agreements to enhance the free movement of people and goods across borders.

Mr. Alex Soros congratulated President Mahama on his re-election and praised his leadership. He noted his visit marked the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS, emphasizing the Open Society Foundations’ support for regional integration and their interest in developing partnerships for further efforts in this area.
