Nandi hills: An environmental initiative has seen the planting of 5,000 tree seedlings along the Kisoiywo River in Nandi Hills, undertaken by Eco Greenlife Global (EGG) in partnership with the County Government of Nandi. This effort aims to conserve the environment and enhance climate resilience.
According to Kenya News Agency, EGG is collaborating with the government, other groups, and local residents to restore and sustain the local ecosystem. The focus is on planting indigenous trees, which are effective in restoring water catchment sources and mitigating climate change. During the launch of the planting exercise, EGG founder Ibrahim Kibiwott emphasized the importance of tree planting in conserving water ecosystems and called on residents to ensure the trees grow to maturity. He highlighted that planting trees helps address food shortages and protects water sources and life.
Nandi East Sub County Administrator Barnabas Talaam stressed the need for everyone to embrace tree planting, explaining that trees are vital for ensuring a fresh air supply and reducing atmospheric carbon. County Environmental Director James Melly praised EGG’s efforts to green the wetlands and water banks but cautioned residents to remove eucalyptus trees along rivers due to their negative impact on water sources. A grace period of seven days has been given for compliance, after which the county will enforce tree removal.
Assistant County Commissioner Dominic Onyango reiterated the government’s commitment to greening the environment, which contributes positively to healthy living.
