Adidome Government Hospital Maintains Services Amid Nationwide GRNMA Strike

Adidome: Despite the ongoing nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), management of the Adidome Government Hospital, in the Central Tongu District has put measures in place for patients to receive medical treatment and render other essential services. The continuation of services at the facility has been attributed to hospital management intervention, which facilitated some staff members attending to patients at the Out-Patient Department (OPD) and emergency wards.

According to Ghana News Agency, this comes amid a complete withdrawal of services by GRNMA members across the country, following the escalation of their industrial action on June 9, 2025. The strike, which began in phases on June 2, is in protest of the delayed implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement, which outlines salaries, allowances, and conditions of service for nurses and midwives. The GRNMA argues that the government’s approach to negotiations violates provisions under Act 651 of the Labour Law, which mandates good faith in labour discussions.

Although the National Labour Commission (NLC) has secured an interim injunction to restrain the association from continuing the strike, GRNMA members in many parts of the country have maintained their stance, refusing to resume duties until their demands are addressed. The NLC has subsequently filed an application for substituted service and is pursuing compulsory arbitration.

At Adidome Government Hospital, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that some patients had access to care, with several expressing relief and gratitude. They commended the facility’s management and the staff who remained at post despite the broader strike action. Mr Samuel Adzey, the Administrator of the hospital disclosed to the GNA that all patients who visited the facility were attended to and these measures were put in place to save lives despite the ongoing strike action.

‘I was able to receive care at the OPD today, and I’m thankful for the nurses who chose to stay and help,’ a patient who visited the Adidome Government Hospital stated. ‘We are hopeful the situation is resolved soon for the sake of all patients nationwide.’

Residents and patients in the Central Tongu District have appealed to both government and GRNMA leadership to engage in constructive dialogue to bring the impasse to a resolution, stressing the importance of uninterrupted healthcare services. In a statement, the GRNMA reaffirmed its commitment to continuing the strike until the government fulfils the terms of the Collective Agreement. The association urged authorities to take immediate steps to address their grievances and ensure improved working conditions for its members.

While services remain disrupted at many public health facilities nationwide, the situation at Adidome Government Hospital highlights the efforts of healthcare professionals and administrators working under difficult circumstances to maintain essential care. Meanwhile, Mr Amos Dzah, Public Relations Officer of the Ho Teaching Hospital told the GNA, the authorities are ‘managing’ the situation, though the impact of the strike action is grave.
