STMA to Clamp Down on Stray Cattle in Sekondi-Takoradi

Sekondi: Mr. Frederick Faustinaus Faidoo, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), has announced that the Assembly will take action against herders who allow their cattle to roam the streets of Sekondi-Takoradi.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Faidoo expressed concerns about the nuisance caused by stray cattle and other animals in the city and emphasized the Assembly’s commitment to addressing these issues to maintain cleanliness in the Metropolis. He mentioned that previous efforts to tackle the problem had been acknowledged, but the Assembly would no longer tolerate the irresponsibility of herders. This statement was made during the First Ordinary Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly at Sekondi.

The meeting served as a platform for Assembly members to discuss activities and projects for the year’s first quarter and review upcoming programs and interventions. Mr. Faidoo highlighted that cattle owners in the Metropolis have been urged to adhere to regulations or face legal sanctions. Furthermore, a team from the Environmental Health Unit is set to commence operations to arrest stray animals to ensure good hygiene and sanitation.

Addressing security issues, Mr. Faidoo assured that the city remains peaceful, with only isolated incidents of miscreant activities. He emphasized the Metropolitan Security Council’s strategy of promptly addressing security concerns and maintaining active information-sharing platforms.

Regarding finances, Mr. Faidoo reported that the Assembly’s 2025 Revenue Budget performance reached 85.70% by the end of the first quarter, with expenditure performance at 79.70%. The Assembly plans to diversify its development financing approach to boost local economic investment in the 2025/2026 period.

On health matters, Mr. Faidoo noted that the doctor-to-patient ratio in Sekondi-Takoradi is 1:3178, while the nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:273. The Maternal Mortality Ratio stands at 384 deaths per 100,000 live births, exceeding the national average of 310. He stressed the need for increased investment in maternal health services.

In education, the Assembly aims to support schools in need of furniture to enhance the learning environment and overall education quality. Regarding waste management, Mr. Faidoo stated that the Assembly is preparing communal container sites to evacuate old refuse dumps, especially with the onset of rains and a cholera outbreak.

Mr. Faidoo concluded by updating other projects and interventions, urging members to support the Assembly in driving development for the benefit of the populace.
