Ada East: Mr. Wilfred Tetteh Wussah, Assembly Member for Alata Electoral Area in the Ada East District, has expressed concern over the increasing rate of poor sanitation practices among residents. Despite acknowledging the strong communal development spirit, Mr. Wussah lamented the growing sanitation malpractices in the area.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Wussah revealed that some residents resort to disposing of human excreta in polythene bags and leaving them in open spaces, particularly behind houses, which he described as troubling and disgraceful. He mentioned that these bags are sometimes disposed of in a public toilet facility he had constructed for the community’s use.
Mr. Wussah, in collaboration with community elders, built a toilet facility intended for children but also serving the elderly. However, he expressed frustration over the continued misuse of the facility by some community members. He pointed out that improper disposal methods might complicate the process of dislodging waste when the latrine is full.
To combat these issues, a committee has been established to patrol the area, arrest offenders of sanitation rules, and prevent people from bathing in the river. Mr. Wussah urged residents to prioritize sanitation to prevent outbreaks of cholera and other sanitation-related diseases in the community.
During a visit by the Ghana News Agency, it was observed that apart from the existing toilet facility, a larger one with 30 to 50 seats is under construction. This project was reportedly initiated by the local Member of Parliament in 2022.
