Kaneshie: The Kaneshie District Court One has granted GHS30,000 bail to a driver accused of knocking down a nine-year-old girl, leaving her paralysed. Michael Kwadjo Thomson denied charges of careless and inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm to Vanessa Angel Aikins. He is expected to reappear in court on June 23, 2025.
According to Ghana News Agency, Police Sergeant Sandra Amakye, led by Chief Inspector Apewah Achana, stated that on February 26, 2025, at 1527 hours, Thomson had been driving a Toyota Corolla saloon car from Kawukudi towards Adabraka via the Kanda highway. On reaching Kanda Islamic traffic light, which was not functioning, Thomson failed to exercise due care and attention, hitting Vanessa, who was crossing the road.
The victim was rushed to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, where she was admitted for treatment and discharged on April 18, 2025. On May 17, 2025, her grandmother, Celestina Aikins, submitted to the police receipts totalling GHS21,470.30, covering medical expenses. Following investigations, Thomson was charged.
His counsel, seeking bail, said he took the girl to the hospital after the accident, turned himself in to the police, and submitted his vehicle to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority for assessment. He added that Thomson had contributed financially to her treatment and was assisting in securing insurance coverage for her.
