Cape Coast: Mr Kwaku Kwarteng, the Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, has highlighted a pressing issue in Ghana’s political landscape, describing the nation’s leadership crisis as not just a failure of the political class but a potential harbinger of a bleak generational future if the current leadership model remains unchanged.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Kwarteng, who is also a former Deputy Minister of Finance, urged Ghanaians to support a leader with the exceptional skills necessary to transform the country’s economic potential into genuine progress and prosperity for all citizens, not just a select few. Speaking at a Tertiary Education Confederacy Network (TESCON) meeting at the University of Cape Coast, he emphasized the need for radical leadership to revitalize the struggling economy.
The meeting, themed ‘Navigating the Entrepreneurial Journey and Social Networking,’ brought together influential figures from the New Patriotic Party, including current and former Members of Parliament, parliamentary candidates, Central Regional executives, and previous ministers and appointees.
Mr Kwarteng expressed his disappointment with the political leadership, stating that governance should not be about self-serving interests. He stressed that the government’s role is crucial in nation-building, fostering political stability, and acting as a mediator between public, private, and civil society to provide public goods and services that encourage social harmony and economic growth.
He lamented the inefficiencies within the political class, citing the tendency to award overpriced contracts, which drains the economy of funds meant for development. He called for a shift from the post-independence style of governance characterized by borrowing and kickbacks, which he believes stifles entrepreneurship.
Dr Stephen Amoah, former Deputy Finance Minister and current MP for Nhyiaeso, also addressed the students, highlighting the importance of embracing technology for self-improvement and preparing for future opportunities. He supports youth empowerment through education and technology, advocating for initiatives like building classrooms and providing computers.
Mr Emmanuel Essel, President of UCC TESCON, reiterated their commitment to political mobilization, advocacy, and community engagement, aiming to strengthen the party’s impact among the youth.
