Kinshasa Governor Orders Removal of Illicit Markets on Avenue Kasa-Vubu

Kinshasa : The governor of Kinshasa, Daniel Bumba, has ordered the evacuation of all stalls and other products displayed in illicit markets along Avenue Kasa-Vubu and around the central market.

According to Radio Okapi, this order was issued on Tuesday, May 6, as part of efforts to facilitate the ongoing rehabilitation of the road, which is currently hindered by the presence of vendors. The construction work is being complicated by traders who have occupied the area, making it difficult to progress with the paving.

Even as the paving continues, drainage systems are already blocked by waste and bags discarded by both merchants and shoppers. The clearing of stalls has also taken place on Rwakadingi and Itaga avenues. Sources from the City Hall indicate that this initiative is expected to be expanded across the entire capital.

The governor reiterated the prohibition on using public spaces for commercial purposes and promised sanctions for non-compliance. Despite numerous operations aimed at eliminating illicit markets in Kinshasa in the past, the issue persists.
