Eldoret: Permanent Secretary for medical services Dr. Ouma Oluga visited Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) to inspect the implementation of specialized services projects, focusing on cardiology and radiology services offered at the facility.
According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Oluga confirmed that MTRH now provides specialized cardiology services where heart surgeries can be performed without the need to open the organ. He expressed satisfaction with the cardiac lab or catheterization efforts, emphasizing the importance of launching fully functional projects.
Dr. Oluga praised the MTRH administration for its contribution to Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by delivering basic and specialized services to over 1.5 million patients annually. He mentioned plans to enhance human resources and train staff with specialized skills, aiming to reduce the need for Kenyans to seek advanced medical treatments abroad.
He also acknowledged MTRH’s advanced radiology services in cancer treatment, which have drawn patients from 27 counties and neighboring countries. Dr. Oluga encouraged Kenyans to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) to access free medical services nationwide, noting the efficiency of SHA systems in covering up to 99 percent of treatment costs for cancer and chronic illnesses.
Dr. Oluga mentioned ongoing efforts to address payment approval delays for dialysis services. MTRH CEO, Dr. Philip Kirwa, highlighted the completion of 10 catheterization lab surgeries for the first time, showcasing the hospital’s advancements in specialized care.
