Residents Encouraged to Register for Affordable Housing at Makenji

Murang’a: The Affordable Housing Board has organized open days at the Makenji housing project in Murang’a County, inviting the public to visit the site and register for the affordable houses that are under construction.

According to Kenya News Agency, the four-day initiative provides locals with an opportunity to tour and inspect the affordable housing units being developed in Kandara constituency. The project includes 220 units, currently at 53% completion, as stated by Murang’a County Director of Housing, Ms. Laureen Wasungu. The houses are expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Ms. Wasungu emphasized the importance of this open day, noting that the public will receive assistance to register on the Boma Yangu portal ahead of occupying their units. ‘From today, Tuesday to Friday, we will have an activation drive here at Makenji, where the public can visit the site and assess the houses. We have a team ready to assist with registration on the Boma Yangu portal,’ she noted.

The Makenji site, situated along the Thika-Kenol highway, will offer 60 three-bedroom units, 100 two-bedroom houses, and 60 studio apartments. Ms. Wasungu highlighted the strategic location, which is accessible for individuals working in Thika, Kenol, and Nairobi. She encouraged locals to explore the open houses and register for future affordable housing opportunities.

The director disclosed that a studio will be priced at Sh. 960,000, two-bedroom units at Sh. 1.92 million, and three-bedroom units at Sh. 2.88 million. Additionally, Ms. Wasungu announced the commencement of construction for 764 affordable housing units at Makuyu, funded at Sh. 1.8 billion, on a 6.25-acre plot along the Kenol-Marua highway.

Furthermore, construction of 1,910 affordable houses in Gatanga constituency has begun, with an expected completion timeline of less than two years. The government’s plan is to construct 10,000 affordable housing units by 2032, with the state department of housing and urban development identifying sites for additional projects in Mathioya, Kangema, Kiharu, and Kigumo constituencies.
