Women Movement and Partners Initiate Tree Planting at Sunyani GBC Premises

Sunyani: The Ahafo Young Women Movement (AYoM), with support from the Global Greengrant Fund (GGF), embarked on a tree planting initiative at the Bono Regional Office of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). This initiative was part of the 2025 celebration of World Environment Day (WED). AYoM is an organization committed to advocating for women’s rights and promoting environmental sustainability.

According to Ghana News Agency, the AYoM collaborated with Livelihood and Environment Ghana (LEG), an NGO focused on environmental issues, and other local partners to plant a variety of tree species. The trees, including Montalis, Royal Palm, Ofram, Mango, and Lemon, were planted to enhance the aesthetics of the GBC premises and contribute to environmental conservation.

The initiative also saw participation from the Department of Forest Science of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Network for Rights and Environmental Governance (NEWREG), Tano Women Empowerment and Development Association (TWEDA), Women Association of Environmental Sustainability (WAES), and Women Integrated Development Association (WIDA).

World Environment Day, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is an annual event celebrated on June 5th since 1973. It serves as a global platform for environmental awareness and action. The 2025 event, hosted by the Republic of Korea, will focus on addressing plastic pollution.

Madam Priscilla Mensah, Leader of AYoM, revealed that with GGF’s support, the association secured land in the Sunyani West Municipality to plant various tree species to combat climate change. She emphasized the vulnerability of women and children to climate impacts, noting the global warming challenge and its effects on farming.

Mr. Richard Adjei-Poku, Executive Director of LEG, highlighted tree planting as an effective climate change mitigation strategy. He encouraged Ghanaians to adopt tree planting and nurturing practices to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve climate adaptation efforts.

Professor Daniel Akoto Sarfo from UENR discussed the pervasive issue of microplastics and urged the public to avoid indiscriminate plastic disposal and engage in tree planting for national interest.

Mrs. Christiana Kumah, Bono Regional Director of GBC, expressed gratitude to the NGOs and committed to ensuring the maintenance and growth of the planted trees.
