Algiers: Mr Bright Delali Agordzo, Volta Regional Chairman of the Ghana Red Cross Society, has expressed concern over declining youth volunteerism, warning that the trend threatens humanitarian services and weakens community support systems across the region. He raised the concern at the opening of the 2025 Volta Regional Red Cross Youth Camp and Leadership Workshop, currently underway at Sokode Senior High Technical School.
According to Ghana News Agency, addressing young participants drawn from Ghana, Togo, and Nigeria, Mr Agordzo emphasised that volunteerism remained the lifeblood of humanitarian action and must be protected and promoted. He stated, Volunteerism is gradually fading among young people. It is our duty to reignite that spirit. Strong, compassionate and well-trained youth are the backbone of effective humanitarian action and community resilience.
The Chairman noted that many young people were losing interest in community service and social responsibility, adding that the situation could weaken school- and community-based humanitarian programmes in the years ahead. He urged participants to embrace a renewed sense of duty, stressing that selfless service was essential for disaster response, health education, first aid delivery, and climate adaptation efforts across the region.
Mr Agordzo said the youth camp provided a platform to rebuild commitment to humanitarian service, strengthen networks, and inspire leadership among young Red Cross volunteers. He commended international volunteers from the Nigerian and Togolese Red Cross Societies for participating in the camp, describing their involvement as a reminder of the universal and unifying nature of the Red Cross Movement.
Mr Agordzo encouraged the youth to take advantage of the opportunity to learn, collaborate, and dedicate themselves to service, stressing that volunteerism must remain a defining value of Red Cross youth activities for sustainable national development.
