Ouagadougou: The badminton players of the Kadiogo region emerged victorious in the national badminton championships for junior and cadet categories, held in Ouagadougou from August 30 to 31.
According to Burkina Information Agency, more than a hundred players from these categories gathered in the Burkinabe capital to compete in the championships. The junior finals took place on the morning of August 30, with the general public witnessing two cadet finals (girls’ doubles and boys’ singles) in the evening.
In the girls’ doubles event, Rebecca Sawadogo and Djeneba Diallo from Bobo-Dioulasso were unable to match the prowess of Kadidjatou Kere and Aminata Bako from Ouagadougou. The Ouagadougou team dominated the first set with a score of 21 to 5. In the second set, the Bobo team slightly improved with a score of 7 to 21, yet the capital’s pair secured victory by winning two sets to none.
In the boys’ singles final, Franck Belemssigri delivered a stunning performance against Leonel Kabore, securing both sets with scores of 21 to 16 and 21 to 19. The Somgande crowd was entertained by the engaging match.
Franck Belemssigri, after his win, remarked, “The game wasn’t easy because I had a strong opponent. I managed to overcome him. Badminton brings me joy and friendships.”
Dr. Boukari Ouedraogo, President of the Burkina Faso Badminton Federation, expressed satisfaction with the 9th edition of the championships. “We had a significant participation from various regions of Burkina Faso. The level has increased, and we are confident in the next generation,” he stated. He added that efforts will be intensified to ensure these young talents progress to higher categories, noting the international success of Burkinabe badminton.
The first-place winners in each category received trophies, gold medals, and cash prizes, while the second-place finishers were awarded silver and bronze medals along with cash prizes.
The event was overseen by Zoungrana Hubert from the Ministry of Sports. He praised the Burkinabe Badminton Federation for organizing the championship and highlighted the ministry’s focus on nurturing future talent by establishing a permanent secretariat.
