Transport Operators in Western North Region Comply with Fare Reduction Directive

Wiawso: Transport operators in the Western North Region have complied with the 15 per cent reduction in fares directive for commuters. Though the directive took effect on Saturday, May 24, 2025, nationwide, those in Western North Region started the reduction on Monday, May 26. This, according to the leadership, was to further engage major stakeholders within the region on the modalities for reduction.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kwasi Manu, Wiawso Vice Station Master, stated that the fare from Wiawso to Asawinso, which was previously GHC30, is now GHC25. Similarly, fares from Wiawso to Akontombra and Bodi have been reduced from GHC40 to GHC35 respectively. Other stations have also reduced their transportation fares across the entire Western North Region.

Some drivers expressed their willingness to comply with the directive during interviews with the Ghana News Agency. However, they urged the government and other major stakeholders to ensure a reduction in the prices of vehicle parts at various mechanic shops. The drivers noted that while fuel prices have decreased, the rising cost of spare parts could adversely affect transport operators.

Passengers at the Wiawso main lorry station appreciated the government and the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) for the fare reductions. Nonetheless, they expressed the hope that similar reductions would be seen in the prices of essential commodities, such as food.
