Sunyani: Traders and commercial drivers within the Sunyani Central Business District (CBD) have urged local authorities to tackle the congestion in the area, citing challenges related to both human and vehicular traffic. The traders highlighted the issue of hawkers and petty traders occupying street spaces, which obstructs driving and business transactions.

According to Ghana News Agency, the traders, predominantly market women, expressed their concerns during a market survey visit to the CBD. They indicated that the market’s safety has been compromised due to the increasing presence of hawkers and petty traders conducting their economic activities on the streets.

The agency observed that hawkers and petty traders have taken over the streets leading to the main market, selling various items such as food and secondhand clothing. This situation has made it increasingly difficult for vehicles to navigate the area, as some vendors have set up stalls in the middle of the street.

Despite these challenges, some h
awkers explained that they have limited options, as hawking and petty trading are their primary means of economic survival. Nana Kwame Asare, a shop owner in the CBD, emphasized the need for urgent intervention to restore order to the area.

He suggested that authorities designate a specific area for hawkers and petty traders to conduct their business without endangering their livelihoods. This sentiment was echoed by Kwame Adjei, a driver, who noted the difficulties in using the roads due to congestion.

Madam Akuah Donkor, a cassava seller, added that the influx of hawkers has driven buyers away from the market, adversely impacting sales and daily profits. She mentioned that they are often forced to leave their shops and sell on the streets to remain competitive.
