Sunyani Men Consider Reducing Chop Money Amid Decline in Food Prices

Sunyani: Some men in Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital, have expressed their plans to reduce the amount of chop money allocated for their families’ daily food provision due to a decrease in food prices.

According to Ghana News Agency, traders and market women in the Sunyani Business Central District confirmed a marginal decrease in the prices of basic food items. They attributed this to the appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the dollar. During a random interview, men at the CBD remarked that the reduction in food prices would enable them to better manage their family expenses and commended the government for the economic improvement.

Mr. Samuel Darko, a television repairer, expressed his satisfaction with the current economic situation, noting that the decrease in chop money would allow him to save more. He praised President John Dramani Mahama for the cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar and hoped for a similar decrease in building material prices.

Mr. Kofi Danso, a lotto agent, shared that he usually provided between GHC80 and GHC100 daily as chop money. With the food price decrease, he is considering reducing this to between GHC70 and GHC80 for his wife and two children.

Justice Owusu, a shop attendant, urged the government to stabilize the cedi further, as the daily provision of chop money remains a burden. He also appealed to women to understand the need to reduce chop money for the family’s future.

Conversely, Mr. Emmanuel Kofi Asare, a 207 Benz Driver, argued against reducing chop money for the sake of family peace. He advised women to manage expenses wisely and support their husbands in meeting family needs.

Madam Cynthia Adovi, a cold store operator, confirmed a reduction in her product prices but warned men against reducing chop money, as it could lead to household discord.
