Volta: Mr Courage Kumah, Volta/Oti Regional Chair of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), has revealed that striking members of the Association are being threatened at various health facilities in the regions. The threats reportedly involve pressures from the Ministry and facility coordinators urging members to return to work or face non-validation.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Kumah stated that the Association is addressing these issues through measures such as an online reporting system to gather information from the affected members. He identified specific facilities where threats have been reported, including the Ho Teaching Hospital, Volta Regional Hospital, Hohoe, Ho Municipal Health Directorate, and Nkwanta North District Health Directorate, as well as Christian Health Association of Ghana facilities like Comboni and St Anthony Hospital.
Mr Kumah noted that the ongoing strike in the Volta and Oti regions is gaining momentum. During a visit by GNA to the Out-patient Department of the Volta Regional Hospital in Hohoe, it was observed that patients were being attended to by auxiliary staff, such as IT officers and Health Information Officers, who are not adequately trained for the tasks at hand. This situation, he warned, could jeopardize patient safety across the regions.
The Association remains firm in its decision to continue the strike until their demands are met. Legal teams are working on addressing the threats faced by the members, and comprehensive data collection is underway. The GRNMA strike, which began in phases on June 2, 2025, escalated to a complete withdrawal of services on June 9, as a protest against the delayed implementation of the 2024 Collective Agreement concerning salaries, allowances, and working conditions.
