Some Sekondi-Takoradi Drivers Comply with 15% Transport Fare Reduction

Sekondi-Takoradi: Some drivers in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region have complied with the 15 per cent reduction in transport fares as directed by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC). The downward adjustment in transport fares officially took effect on Saturday, May 24, 2025, in line with the recent reductions in prices of petroleum products observed over a period.

According to Ghana News Agency, checks within the Metropolis revealed that some drivers were charging the new fares in compliance with the directive. Some residents who reacted to the move expressed joy and said the new fares had brought some relief to them. Mr. Enoch Boafo, a resident who usually plied the Adu-Bankyease route, said the new price would help ease the pressure on his daily budget. He said: ‘I am happy because at least I will save some money at the end of the month due to the reduction in the transport fares. We hope the price will continue to drop to bring some relief to us.’

Madam Bernice Afoakwah, another resident, said: ‘We used to spend GHC10 to and fro town, but now we can save some GHC1 every day on transport, so we are grateful.’ She commended the drivers for complying with the directive, saying: ‘We all must play our part as citizens to make life easier for all of us.’

Meanwhile, Mr. Kofi Mensah, a taxi driver, told the GNA that he complied with the directive to reduce fares to avoid sanctions by the leadership of the transport unions. ‘Even though there are still high operational costs, like vehicle maintenance and spare parts, which could warrant us to charge the old fares, we have decided to comply with the new directive to avoid being sanctioned by our leaders,’ he stated.
