Nabdam: The Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) Project has intensified efforts to promote peace and communal unity in the Nabdam District through an inter-cluster football gala. The gala brought together 15 teams from across the district.
According to Ghana News Agency, the event was held under the theme, ‘Promoting Unity and Collaboration among Clusters,’ at the Kongo Junior High School Park as part of SOCO’s Component 1.3, focusing on youth engagement and social cohesion. The SOCO project is being implemented in Ghana, Benin, C´te d’Ivoire, and Togo with support from the World Bank, aiming to strengthen resilience in border communities affected by conflict, climate change, and economic challenges.
Mr. Samuel Larbi Agyarko, Zonal Coordinator of the SOCO Project for Upper East and North East Regions, highlighted the important role of sports, particularly football, in fostering social inclusion and community development. ‘This tournament is more than just football; it is a celebration of unity, resilience, and youth empowerment,’ he said. He called on the youth to take ownership of development in their communities, remain united, and become champions of peace and progress.
Mr. Francis TobigYenwoma, the District Chief Executive for Nabdam, described the SOCO Project as a transformative intervention that was nurturing talent and strengthening local cooperation. ‘SOCO has given us a platform to showcase our unity and potential. Today’s event reflects the love and harmony that exists among our people,’ he stated. He encouraged the youth to play an active role in peacebuilding and development and to invest their energies in meaningful and productive activities.
Mr. Peter Philosopher Atsina, the District Director of the National Youth Authority, urged the youth to focus on their futures and avoid behaviors that could derail their progress. ‘As youth, your focus should be on building a better future for the realisation of your potential rather than engaging in activities that would jeopardize your lives,’ he advised.
The event drew participation from traditional leaders, assembly members, development partners, and community-based organisations. The tournament concluded with a high-energy final match between Kongo Football Club and Zanlerigu Football Club, where Kongo FC emerged champions with a 5-4 victory in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regulation time.
