Nkawie: Mr. James Kankam, the School Improvement and Support Officer (SISO) for Nkawie Circuit in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality, has called on parents to make their children’s education a top priority. Speaking at a Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting at the Nkawie Anglican Junior High School, Mr. James Kankam encouraged parents to invest more in their children’s academic development, just as they do for funerals and other social events.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kankam emphasised that providing learning materials, school uniforms, footwear, breakfast, and other basic needs is a core responsibility of parents. These contributions, he noted, would complement government and non-governmental interventions and significantly enhance student motivation, punctuality, and school attendance. ‘Supporting your child’s basic educational needs can inspire them to take their studies seriously, prepare them for higher learning, and ultimately shape their future careers and lives,’ Mr. Kankam said.
He further advised parents to reduce the domestic workload assigned to children at home, allowing them sufficient time for private study, homework, and project work. The PTA meeting was organised to evaluate the school’s academic performance and overall standards, as well as to strategise for the upcoming academic year. Special attention was given to the preparation of the 67 candidates set to sit for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Mrs. Joanna Appiah, Headmistress of the school, commended parents for their active participation in the meeting and urged them to heed to the advice of prioritising the education of their wards. She also spoke about the importance of parental involvement in their children’s education, calling on parents to regularly visit the school, monitor their wards’ academic progress, and collaborate with teachers in instilling discipline and good behavior. ‘Support your children’s teachers. Don’t intimidate them. Work together with us to train your children to become responsible citizens,’ she stated.
