Ahanta West: The Rural Development Network (RUDNET), a non-governmental organization based in the Western Region, has conducted an educational and sensitization program for girls in the Ahanta West Municipality on menstrual hygiene. The initiative aims to align with achieving and sustaining standard environmental health practices among rural girls, ensuring safe menstruation.
According to Ghana News Agency, the program’s main focus is to promote a period-friendly environment for girls, allowing them to thrive. Madam Ruth Akoto, a program officer of RUDNET, stated that the five-day initiative, themed ‘together for a period friendly Ghana,’ seeks to ensure that menstruation does not hinder the girl child’s access to education, health, or other opportunities.
The program aims to educate girls on the meaning and implications of menstruation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining proper personal hygiene during menstrual periods. Additionally, it seeks to demystify negative taboos associated with menstruation. To mark the occasion, school children and other participants received celebratory T-shirts and sanitary pads.
The schools visited during the program included Al-Bafahali Khariyah Islamic School, Optimistic Preparatory, Agona Model School, Westsider International School, Roman Catholic MA School, and Aginor Basic School, among others.
