Professor Akua Opokua Britwum Elected Chair of National Media Commission

Accra: Professor Akua Opokua Britwum, an Associate Professor at the Department of Labour and Human Resource Studies at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has been elected as the Chair of the National Media Commission (NMC). She will hold this position for a three-year term, as announced in a statement by the NMC in Accra.

According to Ghana News Agency, Prof Britwum’s academic background is extensive, with a doctorate from Maastricht University in the Netherlands, along with bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Ghana, Legon. She also possesses a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from UCC. Her secondary education was completed at Aburi Girls’ Secondary School.

Prof Britwum has previously served as the Director of the Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy, and Documentation at UCC. Her academic and professional experience includes the Ela Bhatt Guest Professorship at the University of Kassel in Germany and she was an associate fellow of the Global Labour University.

In addition to her new role, Prof Britwum has contributed significantly to various academic and advocacy platforms. She is a former Convenor of the Network for Women’s Rights in Ghana and a reviewer for several academic journals. She also serves on the editorial board of the Global Labour Journal and the advisory boards of Feminist Africa and the International Review of Social History.

Her research and academic interests are centered on gender and labour studies, development theory, union democracy, and women in the informal economy.
