Accra: Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications, has expressed his respect for United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers during the International Day of UN Peacekeepers commemoration. Speaking at the ceremonies at the State House in Accra, Mr Ofosu highlighted the extraordinary courage of peacekeepers who serve in conflict zones, fostering peace and restoring hope worldwide. He also paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for peace.
According to Ghana News Agency, the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, observed annually on May 29, honors the men and women serving in UN peacekeeping operations for their professionalism, dedication, and courage. It also commemorates those who have lost their lives in pursuit of peace. Mr Ofosu emphasized that UN peacekeeping is a vital multilateral tool for promoting stability, protecting civilians, empowering communities, and supporting humanitarian efforts.
Mr Ofosu noted that peacekeepers face expanding and complex demands due to escalating conflicts and evolving security threats. He stressed the need for multilateralism to deliver peace and stability in such an environment, calling for deeper collaboration between the UN and regional organizations like the African Union. Strengthening these regional bodies is crucial for maintaining international peace and security, he said.
Mr Osama Makkawi, the UN Resident Coordinator ad interim and UNICEF Ghana Representative, acknowledged Ghana’s long-standing commitment to UN Peacekeeping since the early 1960s. Ghana ranks seventh among 122 troop-contributing countries, reflecting its dedication to global peace and security.
