Accra: President John Dramani Mahama on Monday announced plans to digitize road toll collection, as part of the 2025 Economic Policy and Budget Statement of the Government. This initiative aims to modernize the toll system by linking the Ghana cards of car owners to their vehicles, enabling automated billing processes without the need for traditional toll booths.
According to Ghana News Agency, the proposed system will capture an image of each vehicle as it passes through a toll booth and send a bill of GH?1.00 directly to the car owner’s mobile money account or bank account. This initiative was introduced by President Mahama during his address at the 2025 Ghana CEOs’ Summit in Accra, emphasizing a move towards a more streamlined, digital approach to toll collection.
President Mahama highlighted that this system eliminates the need for manual toll gates, underscoring the efficiency and simplicity of the digital process. He mentioned that every vehicle is already linked to the owner’s Ghana card, facilitating easy integration into the new system. He assured that the process would be straightforward, with a nominal fee of one cedi per crossing, which could contribute to the country’s economic development.
The 2025 Ghana CEOs’ Summit, themed ‘Leading Ghana’s Economic Reset: Transforming Business and Governance for a Sustainable Futuristic Economy- A Private-Public Sector CEO Dialogue and High-Impact Learning,’ serves as a critical platform for discussing Ghana’s economic strategies. President Mahama recognized the Summit’s significance in fostering strategic thinking among the country’s key economic players.
Mr. Ernest De-Graft Egyir, Founder/CEO of the Ghana CEOs’ Summit, emphasized the Summit’s vital role in shaping Ghana’s economic trajectory and commended President Mahama for his consistent participation and contributions to the event.
