Accra: Over 1,200 candidates have taken part in the electrical wiring examination organized by the Energy Commission at four centers located in Accra, Takoradi, Kumasi, and Tamale. This nationwide initiative aims to ensure that future electrical professionals possess the necessary skills to safely perform wiring services in various environments, including residential, commercial, and industrial settings.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Stephen N. Yomoh, an Engineer and Assistant Manager at the Energy Commission, shared these details at the Accra examination center, situated on the campus of Accra Technical Training Centre. Mr. Yomoh highlighted a steady increase in candidate numbers over the years, indicating a growing interest among trainees to undergo the examination. He stressed the inherent risks associated with electricity, emphasizing the need for rigorous testing and training for professionals before they engage in wiring services.

Mr. Yomoh warned that inadequate training could compromise the qu
ality of wiring, potentially exposing occupants of homes, offices, and industries to hazards, especially fires. He encouraged candidates to participate in the certification experts program to stay updated with current trends in electrical wiring services. Mr. Yomoh explained that certification requires practitioners to accumulate 60 cumulative points every two years for renewal.

He also noted the rising participation of female candidates in the exams and reiterated the Commission’s commitment to encouraging more women to pursue careers in electrical engineering. Mr. Appiagyei Kwame Torto, President of Electrical Inspectors Ghana, emphasized the importance of the wiring examination for all aspiring electrical engineers, regardless of their educational background. He explained that engineering standards, established by the Energy Commission and approved by the standards authority, apply across domestic, commercial, and industrial settings.

In Ghana, electrical wiring examinations are an essential component of
the certification process for electricians, conducted by the Energy Commission of Ghana in accordance with the Electrical Wiring Regulations 2011 (L.I. 2008).
