Nigerian Peacekeepers Honored for Service in The Gambia

Banjul: In a ceremony held on the 9th of May 2025, members of the 9th Nigerian Company (NIGCOY 9) of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia were awarded the ECOWAS Peace Medal. The unit had been deployed since the 26th of June 2024, contributing to peace, stability, and security in the region.

According to African Press Organization, the ceremony was attended by Her Excellency Mrs Miatta Lilly French, ECOWAS Special Representative and Head of Mission in The Gambia, and the Gambian Minister of Defence, the Honourable Sering Modou. The event also saw the participation of several high-ranking civilian and military figures. The award recognizes the invaluable contributions, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication of the Nigerian peacekeepers during their mission.

The ECOWAS Peace Medal is an acknowledgment of the commitment shown by NIGCOY 9 in maintaining peace and stability on the west coast of The Gambia. The ceremony underscored the importance of their service and the role of international cooperation in regional peacekeeping efforts.
