Nakuru: The Nakuru Athletics Club (NAC) has celebrated its 100th anniversary, marking a century of significant contributions to the sporting community in Kenya. The club, a notable establishment since its inception under colonial rule, held a series of events to commemorate this milestone.
According to Kenya News Agency, the festivities were highlighted by remarks from Dr. Victor Achoka, the club chairman, who reflected on the club’s century-long journey of learning, progress, and growth. He praised the dedication of individuals who have contributed to the club’s excellence over the years. Dr. Achoka noted the various sporting activities hosted by the club, including soccer, cricket, rugby, and others, which culminated in a tree-planting exercise aimed at promoting sustainability and combating climate change.
Established in 1926, NAC is known for its exclusive membership and top-notch facilities that support a wide range of sports. Over the years, the club has been instrumental in nurturing athletic talent, producing world-class players. One of the club’s historical highlights includes its connection to D.S. ‘Lofty’ Reynolds, a legendary East African rugby player of the 1950s and 1960s, who is remembered through the Lofty Cup competition.
Dr. Achoka expressed commitment to continuing the club’s legacy into the next century, focusing on fostering sportsmanship and community engagement. The club’s rich history includes hosting significant cricket matches, underscoring its importance in the region’s sports landscape.
Nakuru Deputy Governor David Kones lauded the club’s management for their leadership and dedication, which have sustained the club’s success.
