Accra: President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his appreciation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the Asantehene, for his involvement in efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Bawku. The commendation was made during a courtesy visit by Otumfuo to the Presidency in Accra.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Otumfuo and his entourage visited the Presidency to offer congratulations to President Mahama on his recent election victory in the December 7, 2024 general election and to reciprocate the President’s visit to Manhyia shortly after assuming office. The President praised the Otumfuo for utilizing his platform to uphold cultural heritage and tackle pressing national issues such as education, health, justice, and peace.
President Mahama highlighted Otumfuo’s successful mediation in the Dagbon Chieftaincy crisis as one of his significant national contributions. As Chair of the Committee of Eminent Chiefs, Otumfuo’s leadership helped transform Dagbon from a state of division to one of reconciliation and revitalized leadership. “Today, the Kingdom of Dagbon stands united and strong thanks to your tireless commitment and your unifying spirit,” the President stated.
The President acknowledged Otumfuo’s current efforts to mediate the Bawku conflict, describing them as complex and challenging but essential for offering the country renewed hope. He emphasized the Asantehene’s role in paving the way for lasting peace in one of Ghana’s most fragile regions through quiet diplomacy, cultural sensitivity, and unwavering resolve. “I wish you well in this endeavour and we all have confidence that lasting peace will come to Bawku,” he added.
These initiatives, President Mahama noted, were not merely acts of service but acts of nation-building, reflecting Otumfuo’s understanding that Ghana’s progress hinges on unity, mutual respect, and justice. “As President of the Republic, I want to assure you and all traditional authorities of this government’s commitment to work in full partnership with the Institution of Chieftaincy,” he stated, emphasizing that traditional leadership is seen as an essential partner in shaping the nation’s future.
In response, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu commended President Mahama for his humility and encouraged him to maintain it. He expressed his support for the President, urging him to be bold in his leadership and to fulfill the expectations of Ghanaians. Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was also present at the meeting.
