Kisii: The 2024 Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Kisii County finals concluded in high drama and celebration, showcasing top talent, sportsmanship, and rising competition across multiple disciplines. Held across various venues including Nyamache Boys and Magena Boys, the finals brought together the county’s finest in soccer, rugby, and volleyball, as schools battled for a place in the upcoming Nyanza Regional Championships.
According to Kenya News Agency, in the boys’ soccer category, defending champions Sameta High School retained their crown after narrowly defeating Ong’icha Secondary 1-0 in a tense final match. The win was sealed by a second-half penalty, capping a strong tournament run for Sameta, who won four matches and drew one on their way to the top. It marked the second year in a row the two teams met in the finals, following Sameta’s commanding 4-0 win over Ong’icha in 2023. An appeal by Ong’icha over alleged player ineligibility was dismissed by the jury, affirming Sameta’s clean victory.
In the girls’ soccer final, what initially appeared to be a win for Kerongorori Girls over Mobamba was later overturned after an appeal by Metembe, who had previously lost to Kerongorori in the semifinals. The jury ruled in favor of Metembe, citing the use of an ineligible player by Kerongorori. As a result, Mobamba, who were runners-up, were awarded the ticket to the regional games.
The finals also saw new champions crowned in rugby sevens, where Cardinal Otunga High School dethroned defending champions Kisii School with a commanding 10-0 victory. In the girls’ rugby category, Nyagichenche Girls proved dominant, thrashing Nyangoge 17-0 to claim the title. In girls’ volleyball, Hema Moja Chitago delivered an impressive performance, beating Kereri Girls in straight sets to emerge champions.
Speaking during the semi-finals held at Magena Boys, Kisii County’s Executive Committee Member for Youth, Sports, Culture, Arts, and Social Services, Dr. Timothy Arege, lauded the talent and discipline displayed by the student-athletes. He reaffirmed the county’s dedication to investing in youth sports as a critical part of education and community development.
According to KSSSA officials, all winning teams from the county finals will now advance to represent Kisii at the Nyanza Regional Championships, where they will compete with top schools from across the region.
