Kandadji dam: President Bazoum instructed to speed up implementation

The President of the Republic, Head of State, HE Mr. Mohamed Bazoum, chaired Tuesday morning May 24, 2022, a high-level meeting on the implementation of the Kandadji Program in the presence in particular of the Prime Minister, Head of Government, HE Mr. Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou and ministers involved in this program.

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss and see what steps should be taken to accelerate the implementation of this program, indicated the Director General of the Kandadji Dam Agency (ABK), Mr. Amadou Harouna.

The President of the Republic, he recalled, had already received Kandadji’s team, as soon as he took office, to inquire about the progress of the program. He visited the Kandadji construction site and today, he brought all the actors to discuss, give instructions, accelerate the implementation of this program, explained Mr. Amadou Harouna.

Referring to the progress of the program, the Director General of the ABK insisted on two major components of this program: civil engineering and the resettlement of populations.

As far as civil engineering is concerned, the work is in progress, the power plant too, the company has been chosen and the work has started and the energy transport line, too, the company has been chosen and the work is going start soon, he said.

Regarding the resettlement of populations, Mr. Amadou Harouna said that, given the large mass of populations to be displaced, to make this resettlement very successful, two waves are planned: the first wave concerns the population settled on the site of the dam and that which is impacted by the construction of the dam. This population has been completely relocated to a new site with all the necessary amenities, he said.

“Now, we are working on the resettlement of the population of the second wave (50,000 people), the entire city of Ayorou and twenty-four administrative villages to be moved”, he underlined. “Funding has been mobilized. Today, we are in the process of developing the new site where we must resettle this population,” he added.
