Issa Hayatou, a towering figure in African football, has left an indelible mark on the sport, leaving behind a legacy of achievements that will be remembered for generations to come.

His remarkable career, spanning over four decades, was marked by numerous milestones and successes that transformed the face of football in Cameroon and beyond.

As Vice-President of the Cameroon football fédération from 19841986 and then President (1986-1988), Cameroon won two Africa Cup of Nations titles in 1984 and 1988.

Hayatou’s impact on Cameroonian football was further solidified through his role as board chair for the Cameroon National Football Academy, Anafoot, which has become a hub for developing talented players in Cameroon.

On the continental stage, Hayatou’s achievements were just as impressive. As President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) from 1987 to 2017, he oversaw significant transformations in African football.

His tenure was marked by the historic hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South
Africa, the expansion of the Africa Cup of Nations from 8 to 16 teams, and the introduction of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup in 2004.

Hayatou’s legacy is a testament to his dedication, vision, and leadership. He will be remembered as a pioneer who contributed immensely to the growth and development of football in Cameroon and Africa. Rest in peace, Issa Hayatou.
