Accra: Ms Wendy Van Meel, Deputy Head of Mission at the Netherlands Embassy, has asserted that societies that disregard the rights and needs of women and girls risk failing in their fundamental responsibilities. She highlighted the importance of mobilizing women, civil society, and advocacy groups to advance gender equality through innovative digital tools and technologies. Ms. Van Meel made these remarks during the launch of the She Leads Social Movement by Plan International Ghana.
According to Ghana News Agency, the She Leads Project has successfully mobilized over 1,000 girls and young women across Ghana into a social movement that advocates for gender equality, leadership inclusion, and the protection of girls’ rights. This network consists of student clubs, community advocates, change champions, and partner organizations working together towards a common goal.
Ms. Van Meel emphasized the crucial role of the project’s partners in realizing the vision for women and girls, which has contributed to significant progress and valuable insights. She acknowledged the decade-long perseverance and advocacy that led to the milestone of having an Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) law in Ghana, celebrating this achievement.
She expressed hope that young people would leverage technology to amplify voices, drive change, and demand accountability in upholding the law’s provisions. Ms. Vivian Osei Boateng, National Convener of She Leads Social Movement, described the initiative as a collective effort driven by passion and determination to challenge inequality.
Ms. Boateng emphasized that the work is far from over, framing She Leads as more than just a name. It is a call to action, an unrelenting commitment, and a paramount responsibility to create spaces where women’s voices are heard, their ideas embraced, and their leadership celebrated at every step.
She encouraged young women to persist in the face of challenges, affirming their contributions would have a lasting impact. She stated that change demands persistence, courage, and unity, expressing confidence that together, they will rise to the challenges faced by young girls and women in the community.
