Kiambu: A day after protests rocked parts of Kiambu County, a dedicated group of environmental volunteers dubbed the Green Warriors have stepped in to restore order and cleanliness across affected areas.
According to Kenya News Agency, early Friday morning, the Green Warriors were spotted in various towns across Kiambu, including Ruiru, Githurai, and Thika town, removing burnt tyres, stones, and other debris that demonstrators had used to block roads. Their swift response ensured roads were quickly cleared for motorists and pedestrians, restoring both safety and normalcy.
Led by community-based environmental groups and supported by the Kiambu County Government’s Department of Environment, the cleanup initiative was not only a show of resilience but also a testament to the power of collective action. ‘Our mission goes beyond cleaning, we are here to reclaim our environment and promote peaceful, sustainable communities,’ said Peter Mwangi, one of the coordinators of the Green Warriors team.
The cleanup exercise not only improved the physical appearance of the towns but also helped restore calm and a sense of normalcy among residents. Business owners reopened their shops and public transport services returned to regular schedules.
The presence of the Green Warriors on the ground served as a reassuring sight to many, reinforcing the role of community-driven initiatives in promoting peace, resilience, and environmental responsibility. Residents applauded the initiative, with many praising the young volunteers for stepping up when the community needed them most.
‘This is what patriotism looks like, cleaning up after chaos and showing that we care for our environment and each other,’ said Lucy Wambui, a business owner in Githurai. County officials have also encouraged more community-led initiatives, pledging continued support to such youth-led environmental efforts. The Green Warriors are expected to continue their cleanup drive in other areas affected by the protests in the coming days.
As the county heals from the aftermath of the demonstrations, the Green Warriors’ actions have become a beacon of hope and a reminder that positive change begins with individual and collective responsibility.
