Government Prioritizes Social Protection Resources Expansion: Gender Minister Highlights Commitments

Accra: Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has emphasized the government’s dedication to expanding resources and enhancing the social protection system. She highlighted the importance of prioritizing social services alongside other sectors to build a caring society.

According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Lartey made these remarks at the Graduation Ceremony of the third batch of the Social Services Workforce and the launch of the Diploma in Social Work, organized in Accra by the School of Social Work under the Gender Ministry. Sixty students completed the seven-week Social Services Workforce course.

Dr Lartey announced plans for recruiting and training additional social workers and upgrading institutions like the School of Social Work into centers of excellence. She also mentioned improvements in working conditions, tools, and logistics for the frontline workforce, as well as strengthening the connection between social services and national development priorities.

The Minister praised social workers as unsung heroes who address cases of abuse, support children, assist the elderly, and help families in crisis. She called for increased recognition, investment, and support for the social service profession, emphasizing its role in Ghana’s inclusive future.

Dr Lartey congratulated the graduates, encouraging them to lead with integrity, uphold social justice, and contribute to nation-building, while recognizing both the challenges and rewards of transforming lives.

Mr. Osama Makkawi Khogali, United Nations Children’s Fund’s (UNICEF) representative to Ghana, advocated for the passage of the Social Work Professional Bill to establish a legal framework for licensing, regulating, and registering professionals. He assured UNICEF’s commitment to supporting the Ministry through a capacity-building strategy for the social service workforce.
