GOC President Akpokavie Congratulates Saminu on Record-Breaking Performance

Accra: Mr Richard Akpokavie, the President of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and Commonwealth Sports – Ghana (CSG), has congratulated sprinter Abdul Rasheed Saminu on his remarkable new national 100m record.

According to Ghana News Agency, the 27-year-old Ghanaian clocked a stunning 9.86 seconds at the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCCA) event on Friday, May 30, 2025. He shattered the national record previously held by Benjamin Azamati, who had set the time at 9.90 seconds, and has now become the world leader in men’s 100m for 2025.

This achievement not only highlights Saminu’s talent but also secures his spot at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, Japan, later this year. In a statement, Mr Akpokavie praised Saminu’s consistency and dedication, noting his notable performances, including a gold medal in the Africa Championship relay in Cameroon and a semi-final appearance at the last Olympics.
