Ghanaian Umpire Gabriel Atseku Makes History at Badminton International Challenge

Saint-Denis: Gabriel Atseku has become the first Ghanaian to officiate at the Badminton International Challenge held in Saint-Denis, R©union, France. Mr. Atseku’s participation at the tournament, which took place from May 11-16, 2025, marks a significant milestone for Ghanaian badminton officiating, showcasing the nation’s growing influence in the global badminton community.

According to Ghana News Agency, Atseku’s professionalism, precision, and adherence to international standards as a technical official have earned him commendations from players, coaches, and fellow officials. He has etched his name in history, becoming the first Ghanaian to qualify as a world-class technical official at the Badminton International Challenge. His certification paves the way for future Ghanaian officials and reinforces Africa’s growing influence in badminton technical governance.

As one of Africa’s certified umpires, Atseku’s role at the tournament underscores the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) and Badminton World Federation (BWF)’s recognition of Ghana’s commitment to developing world-class officials. Mr. Evans Yeboah, President of the Ghana Badminton Association, stated that Atseku’s success was a testament to years of hard work, positioning him among the sports’ elite technical officials worldwide. He highlighted that Gabriel’s achievement is a proud moment for Ghana, reflecting the high standards aimed for in their technical officiating programs initiated in a national talent hunt in 2018.

The Ghana Badminton Association recently graduated 113 technical officials, offering a side career for many and expanding the pathway for world-class officials like Gabriel Atseku. Representing Ghana at this level was an incredible honor for Atseku, who expressed gratitude for the support from the GBA and the BCA. He affirmed that the experience has motivated him to continue upholding the integrity of the sport.
